Artist's Description

The surfer was towed into this wave at Cortes Bank on 1-19-2001. This picture is a photo of my true-to-scale 30"x40" painting and reconstruction of one frame from the ending to the movie "Step Into Liquid" the wave-of-the-day. Because of the extremely low camera angle, this wave actually looks smaller than it was. Notice how deep he is positioned, just barely escaping the avalanche. This marks the historic opening of Cortes Bank to tow surfing. This wave was judged to be 66 feet high by the Billabong XXL, biggest wave surfed that year. The surfer, Mike Parsons, would 7 years later, ride an official 77-footer at Cortes Bank during the historic swell of 1-5-2008.

About John Kaelin

John Kaelin

These are true-to-scale paintings of the biggest waves ever surfed in high definition. Some are imaginary reconstructions of actual events, such as Ken at Log Cabins on "Biggest Wednesday", and Greg Noll at Makaha. There were no photos taken of their historic rides. Others are from sketches I made from viral videos and photos. All surfer and photographer names are available on request. The Mike Parsons wave painting is based on the original photograph by Robert Brown but with a unique view of the trough. There IS NO photograph of Ken Bradshaw's biggest wave. Hank's famous photo featured on Ken Bradshaw's web site was a smaller 65-footer Ken rode later the same day. Greg Noll's wave is mythical, with the scale based on Larry...
