This is a high cliff-angle shot of the biggest wave surfed during the 2017-2018 season at Nazare Portugal on 11-08-2017. The surfer was towed into this wave which was judged by the World Surf League as 80 feet high. Because only poor resolution photos and videos were available for analysis, I had to reconstruct this wave based on several photos and videos. The surfer, Rodrigo Koxa, is 5'8" tall, so this painting is a reconstructed as 14-times-overhead (14x5.667=79.3 feet tall). Nazare is famous for a submarine canyon that channels the big swells up close to shore. The cliff is 300 feet high, so the extremely high camera angle makes the wave look bigger than it really is. Compare this to Robert Brown's photo of Mike Parsons at Cortes Bank on 1-5-08 was a very low camera angle, making the wave look smaller than it really was.
These are true-to-scale paintings of the biggest waves ever surfed in high definition. Some are imaginary reconstructions of actual events, such as Ken at Log Cabins on "Biggest Wednesday", and Greg Noll at Makaha. There were no photos taken of their historic rides. Others are from sketches I made from viral videos and photos. All surfer and photographer names are available on request. The Mike Parsons wave painting is based on the original photograph by Robert Brown but with a unique view of the trough. There IS NO photograph of Ken Bradshaw's biggest wave.
