Artist's Description
This painting is true-to-scale from a video of a surfer who was towed into this wave at Nazare, Portugal on 11-01-2011. It was judged by Billabong as 78 feet high. See my next painting which is a 30"x40" analysis of this wave. In my opinion the Billabong XXL overestimated this wave which appears to me in the mid 60s, or in the 10 to 11 times overhead range. The surfer, Garrett MacNamara, is 5'10" tall, for scale-height analysis. The camera angle is very high on the cliff, about 150 feet high, and the wave breaks very close to shore, because it is channeled through a submarine canyon, which makes the wave appear to be much taller than it really is.

The Mike Parsons wave painting is based on the original photograph by Robert Brown but with a unique view of the trough. There IS NO photograph of Ken Bradshaw's biggest wave. Hank's famous photo featured on Ken Bradshaw's web site was a smaller 65-footer Ken rode later the same day. Greg Noll's wave is mythical, with the scale based on Larry...
