Mixed Media - Model In Diorama
Description
This is my model of the USS Enterprise CV6 in a diorama. It has a plexiglass case. This is outside its' case. The model is 1/350 scale, so the ship is 28" long. There is more detail here than you may think. It has 100 human figures. Every airplane has appropriate decals. There is a Hellcat fighter taking off and it looks like it is hovering in the air because it is suspended by a slanted paperclip.
The most decorated warship of WWII, the only ship of her class to survive the war. 20 service stars (major battles), 911 enemy aircraft destroyed, 71 ships sunk, Presidential Unit Citation. In memory of crews killed in action, 235 air crew, 139 ship's crew, 374 total, and thousands injured. During the war she was struck by 7 bombs, one of which was a dud. She was never hit by any torpedoes, but was struck by 2 kamikazes. The second kamikaze hit put her out of action for the war at Okinawa on 14 May 1945. But she was repaired and returned to service after the war. Eventually Enterprise was reduced to scrap metal after she was sold in 1958.
At the end of the war she was armed by 8 x 5" cannons, 6 x Bofors quad 40mm, 8 x Bofors twin 40mm, 50 x Oerlikon 20mm, and protected by a torpedo blister along 3/4 of her length. Launched 3-10-1936 at 19,800 tons with a top speed of 33 knots. This model is roughly how she looked at the end of the war in her glory. Here you see 18 Hellcat fighters taking off, followed by 12 Dauntless divebombers, and 6 Avenger torpedo bombers.
