Greg Noll paddled into this wave at Makaha, Oahu, on 12-4-69, the day Waimea closed out. This is my artist-conception scale of what that wave might have looked, exactly based on Larry Goddard's famous photo of another wave that had Greg's board frozen in the lip that appeared in the LA Times. I was told that Greg actually lost his board just before that wave, but it fortunately popped back within his reach so he could retrieve it and continue paddling out. This is a water-angle view. Greg's board was 11'4" long so I based the wave's scale to about 3.5 board-lengths high. My analysis of Goddard's photo tells me the wave is about 40 feet (3.5x11.333=39.7), plus or minus several feet. He made the drop and could see the wave was closing out so Greg laid back, thinking he could dig a hole in the trough and escape through the back. That was just the beginning of his survival story. It was a life or death struggle to reach shore before the raging current carried him into the...
These are true-to-scale paintings of the biggest waves ever surfed in high definition. Some are imaginary reconstructions of actual events, such as Ken at Log Cabins on "Biggest Wednesday", and Greg Noll at Makaha. There were no photos taken of their historic rides. Others are from sketches I made from viral videos and photos. All surfer and photographer names are available on request. The Mike Parsons wave painting is based on the original photograph by Robert Brown but with a unique view of the trough. There IS NO photograph of Ken Bradshaw's biggest wave. Hank's famous photo featured on Ken Bradshaw's web site was a smaller 65-footer Ken rode later the same day. Greg Noll's wave is mythical, with the scale based on...
